Solar Bird Bath Advantages
Solar bird baths and fountains are very popular and economical as they use the energy in sunlight as a power source for the pump. They do have some disadvantages however as they do not usually store power so that they will cease to work when the sun goes down or on overcast days. They have the advantage however that you do not need power cords from a power outlet which need to be buried underground and limit the distance that the bird bath or fountain can be away from the house.
Types of Solar Bird Baths and Fountains
There are two types of solar fountains or bird baths, ones with built in and those with separate solar panels. If you choose one with separate solar panels you can place the bird bath or fountain in a shady area and hang the solar panels from a nearby tree or post that catches the sun. This allows a lot more versatility for where you can place it. Those with built in solar panels will need to be placed in a sunny position of course.
Energy Storage
Most of the bird baths and fountains on the market are not able to store the sun's energy so will not work once the sun goes down. On days that are overcast the pump may work only very slowly or may stop altogether. This may happen a lot during the winter months so it is a good idea to disconnect the pump to prevent it working intermittently and trying to pump icy water which can cause damage. There are some solar bird baths and fountains with battery back ups but at present these only store enough energy to power the pump for a short time.
Convenience
Solar bird baths and fountains are easy to set up as there is no wiring needed and they can be placed anywhere that will receive enough sunlight. You can place those with remote panels under trees, under arbors, by walls or any other shady spot as long as the remote panels are in the sun.
Environmentally Friendly
Solar bird baths and fountains are environmentally friendly as they do not use electricity, emit no fumes and are not a hazard to children and pets as wired ones may be.
